Rebuilding After the Fire

I’ve lived my whole life in California. The fires that rage during fire season have somehow never affected me directly. Like most in the US, I have witnessed the fires on the news each year and thanked God my home wasn’t one of the countless affected. Many years I have watched the red horizon and worried I would be one of the thousands of residents evacuating—but never was.

Until the summer of 2015.

I lost everything but my sweet cat and the few items I could grab before leaving my house and seeking shelter with family north of me. I cried and cried for days. When I returned, everything was leveled. It had skipped the development next to mine, but the pretty street that had been my home for the last ten years looked like a ghost town.

I am lucky enough to have a fantastic insurance agent. She helped walk me through the next several months of my life. She’s a friend of the family and took it upon herself to check in with me and make suggestions when the time came to rebuild my life. About a year later, I had the bones of a new home in place in Union City, CA. It felt as though each day there was a handful of decisions to make regarding carpet, flooring, doors, windows, asphalt, contractors, materials… My agent referred me to a door and window place she had used for many years (she and her husband flip houses, so I trust her judgment): R&M Quality Windows & Doors. What a blessing working with their professionals turned out to be.

Of course, the team at R&M was kind to me, as I would expect anyone to be who works with a survivor of a California fire. But, it wasn’t just that they were kind to me. They were helpful, assertive, knowledgeable, quick to find solutions, and flexible with my ever-changing and unique home-building schedule. I worked with a lot of great companies throughout the rebuild; R&M was the stand-out crew.

I’ll tell you what made working with their pros so noteworthy to me: their goal was to ensure I was happy, simply put. Other teams during the construction phases from various companies were polite, professional, and thorough (for which I am very grateful), but R&M’s team made sure I was satisfied with each step. Their customer service tipped the scale for me and I will forever retell of my experience with them.

To be honest, I hope I don’t have to work with the team at R&M anytime soon. Rebuilding is an experience I do not wish to repeat. But, I know where to go in the future; hopefully 30 years from now, when I decide to remodel and put in bigger windows. And, I know where to refer everyone in this area. If you are looking to remodel, upgrade, or you need to rebuild, call R & M Quality Windows & Doors.
